There are some insanely talented people in the world

I can't believe this guy is only 24 and doing things like this. Sheesh. Okay, this amazing miniature sculpture is from the Deviantart artist Raskolnikov0610. What amazing details, I can't imagine what sort of devotion it takes to make just one of these creations nontheless the amount he's already made. His work is a real joy to look through.

Psychonauts concept art by Scott C.

I'm trying to think of how to explain Psychonauts...hmmmm. So there's this world where ESP and telekenisis exists and in this world there is a camp for youngin's run by adults who are also super heroes. The hero of the story, Rasputin or Raz for short, has run away from his family life in the circus to join the ranks of the Psychonauts. I guess the camp is like training to become a super hero. So for the first part of the story/gameplay you do basic training and as you play you gain all sorts of powers.

Eventually we find out the camp is in danger and Raz must save everyone! But not before doing amazing things like rifling through the heads (and inner worlds) of different people, discovering an underwater city underneath the camp lake and discovering plots within plots! The imagination is unbelievable in this game. Beautiful, scary, humorous and my favorite thing an undercurrent of dark humor (on a whim I used pyrokinesis on an adorable little squirrel who then promptly was set on fire and turned into a food source for me, go figure) I'm telling you I've played and replayed this game for years and it doesn't get old. The one minor quibble I have about it is that you must possess an extraordinary hand-eye coordination capibility to get to the end (to BEAT the end), and the end part of the game is brutal. (yes, yes all you bastards that have beaten it without trouble, bully for you, now shut up and pity the rest of us who had to play it twenty times to beat it)

Also it's one of those games where if you die or fail you have to start that particular level/part all over again and those kinds of games drives me nuts. The repetiveness can get old and frustrating very fast.

The artwork was penned by the supurbly talented Scott C. who has since the creation of Psychonauts has gone on to bigger and better things (Psychonauts was released in...hmmm 2004? The concept was started ehh...1999? 2000? around there)

I don't know what else to say about the game. I really love it; the mark of a classic is when no matter how much time passes it remains amazing and that is Psychonauts. Pity they never went on to do a second one.

Double Fine

If I had to choose a video game that is the best I would say possibly Psychonauts would fit that bill. It was extraordinary - style, pacing, action, intrigue, imagination. It has it all. Almost a decade has gone by since it's creation and it's still one of my favorites. So look what I found on the Double Fine online store

They have collectable figures of the characters. I think my next post is actually going to be devoted to the art style because it's just so awesome. I would really REALLY recommend playing Psychonauts.

ohhh steampunk on Etsy

Here's some leftover Steampunk pieces I did for the Expo last May. Ohhh, look - how sparkly and lovely.

Recent Photography Project

Project 10: Creative photography (in other words, do whatever you want. I think my teacher has officially run out of photography ideas as we are near the end of the semester.) SO seeing how I am still getting over whatever stupid cold I caught I decided to do some more indoor photography and got out the Micro lens. Man, that is fun. You could do SO MANY THINGS with that lens.

Cartoony fun

Just discovered this webseries by Monty Oum. It isn't a real serious or deep story and frankly the voice acting is kind of...hmmmm BUT the animation is worth watching. The whole thing is on youtube, enjoy!

Bee and Puppycat Entry Five

Not the strongest of the five but eh, oh well.

Obligatory Etsy post

From the Etsy site, geeky keychains. Here I have No Face, Chomper Chain and the grey Totoro (I have a white one too) made out of clay. I actually kept duplicates of these for myself because they are so freaking cute.

Shopping for geeks

If I had a million dollars...

Why did I discover Bethesda has a store where you can buy things like this. Although I have to warn the bobble head above is currently sold out but I will be watching, WATCHING the store- waiting for when they restock. For all those Fallout fans out there (also they have Skyrim and other things in the store asides from Fallout) Oh, the want.

Bee and Puppycat what number are we on? three?

Oh. Number Four, then.

Artist: Minori

So if you type in Tokyo Style into the interwebs you may run across an amazing artist who goes by the name Minori (Kinda like Madonna, or Cher - just one name) who, as you can see, is rather like a living doll. I spent a fascinating couple of hours going through her work. She has amazing style which I'm not sure is catergorized as cosplay, gothic lolita, Victorian or perhaps a mix of all three and then some.

Not only is she amazing to photograph but she is also an illustrator. Website gallery HERE. I wonder how long it takes for her to get into a complete costume?

Local Fun

There is a local spot that's kind of famous here in Reno called Junkee. Rather, it's kind of like two stores in one. The left side is retro/vintage/gently used awesome clothing and accessories. A lot of folks buy for Burning Man at junkees to give you kind of an idea of the variety of clothing you can find.

The right side of Junkee is like an antique store/junk shop/where you find weird and things. Yesterday a friend and I saw one of the sellers latest displays which is more like art. Freaking awesome. I love that store.

Sometimes I hate being an artist. Some days are really hard. When you've been rejected for the fiftieth time from a show, when no one is buying things from you, when no one seems to notice or care about the work you put into the world. It's really sad but I feel sometimes being an artist is tied to relying on validation from other people. If people comment then that must mean you're worth something as an artist. If people buy things that must mean you're doing something right. Then sometimes I think that if you want to be an artist you have to build up a thick shell of indifference and remember that you aren't doing this for the money, you can't do this for the money because that's all the wrong reasons to do it. Create because you have to, because it's what you were born to do and screw everybody else. Today I was rejected from another art show for no specific reason other than 'your work is not what we are looking for at this moment.' That happens a lot. So many rejections and you start to wonder if you're even any good. Some days are really hard.

Bee and Puppycat Entry 3

This one is my favorite I think. Lots of pen and ink and some photoshopping.

Bee and Puppycat T-Shirt Contest Entry 2

This is one of my favorites of the five; adorable Bee in kitty outfit falling with her umbrella. I had trouble getting this one right. The first one I did I ended up totally scrapping but the final drawing I like. A little bit of editing with Photoshop and VOILA adorable art. Even if I don't win I wouldn't mind making my own t-shirt out of these. Or posters! I could definitely do posters out of these.
